combing through the rubble left behind at the Hotel Saratoga a five-star hotel in the historic center of Havana. The 19th century hotel is just across the street from Cuba’s Capitol building and frequents high-profile guests.

Police and fire rescuers have been dispatched to the site and combing through rubble for survivors as at least 13 people were reported to be missing the presidency in a tweet quoted Havana Communist Party official Luis Antonio Torres Iribar.

The provincial director of health Emilio Delgado Iznaga confirms that the health system in Havana is fully active. So far 8 people have died and some thirty are hospitalized” the Cuban Presidential Office said in a tweet on Friday adding that “several people are offering blood donations.”

Mayiee Pérez said she had rushed to the scene after receiving a call from her husband Daniel Serra who works at a foreign exchange shop inside the hotel. She said he told her “I am fine I am fine. They got us out” but had been unable to reach him since.
