Porto fined $1.6M by UEFA and threatened with one-season European ban over unpaid debts

0

Two-time European champion Porto was fined 1.5 million euros ($1.6 million) by UEFA on Friday and threatened with a one-year ban from European competitions because of unpaid debts this season.

UEFA said its club finance monitoring panel put Porto on probation for two years, and the ban will be imposed “if the club does not fulfil the solvency requirements” in the next two seasons.

The threat has been inherited by new club president André Villas-Boas, its one-time coach who went on to work at Chelsea and Tottenham. Villas-Boas last month ended the 42-year presidency of Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa.

Two clubs — Shakhtyor of Belarus and Adana Demirspor of Turkey — were banned for one season for failing to comply with UEFA financial rules. Those bans will be enforced the next time either qualifies for a UEFA competition through the 2026-27 season.

Shakhtyor, which has been implicated in match-fixing in Belarus and hit with points deductions in the national league, was fined its 1.01 million euros ($1.1 million) of UEFA prize money for playing in recent European competitions.

ALSO READ: Juventus parts ways with manager Massimiliano Allegri despite winning Coppa Italia

The UEFA panel analyzes the accounts of hundreds of clubs which qualify for its European competitions in a financial monitoring system once known as “Financial Fair Play.” The first sanctions in 2014 included 20 million euros ($21.7 million) payments by Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

Porto was the headline case of 13 clubs sanctioned by the UEFA panel for so-called “overdue payables” — unpaid or late-paid debts for wages, transfer fees to other clubs or social taxes.

Porto has earned about 60 million euros ($65 million) from UEFA in each of this season and last season for reaching the round of 16 in the Champions League. However, the team has qualified only for the second-tier Europa League next season.

Turkish league leader Galatasaray and Real Betis of Spain also were fined by UEFA though each must pay just 30,000 euros ($32,600).

CSKA Sofia was fined 450,000 euros ($490,000), and Vitória of Portugal, which is part-owned by Aston Villa’s owners, was ordered to pay UEFA 200,000 euros ($217,000). Both CSKA and Vitória were put on probation with the threat of one-season bans by UEFA.

Burnley Vs Nottingham Forest Preview And Prediction

0

As the final gameweek of the Premier League in 2023/24 approaches, Burnley faces Nottingham Forest in a crucial match.

While Burnley is already relegated, Nottingham Forest still has a slim chance of securing their Premier League status.

Match Preview

Burnley, already relegated, will take on Nottingham Forest, who have a slim chance of facing the same fate.

Forest sits three points ahead of Luton Town in 18th place with a significantly better goal difference, making a dramatic relegation unlikely.

Burnley’s relegation was confirmed last weekend after their 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Clarets have had a tough season, managing only five wins.

Despite their struggles, they’ll be looking to end on a high note, possibly moving above Luton Town and closing the gap on Forest if they secure a victory.

Nottingham Forest isn’t in stellar form either, having lost 3-2 to Chelsea in their last match.

However, their 3-1 win over Sheffield United prior to that all but ensured their safety, barring a highly improbable goal difference swing.

Forest has conceded 66 goals this season, with only teams in the bottom three and West Ham United allowing more.

Head-to-Head:

Earlier this season, Burnley and Forest drew 1-1 at the County Ground.

Zeki Amdouni scored for Burnley, but Callum Hudson-Odoi’s spectacular goal leveled the score.

Team News & Updates:

Burnley will likely field a full-strength squad, aiming to give their fans something to cheer about.

Forest will also come prepared, knowing that a point or even a narrow loss will see them safe.

Prediction & Analysis:

For the final match, we predict Burnley will aim for a farewell win at Turf Moor, with over 2.5 goals scored. Forest, while likely safe, will face a Burnley side eager to end their Premier League stint with a victory.

Ranking The 10 Biggest OL Transfers Of The Offseason

0

The spring transfer portal window is closed and a lot of movement has come to an end as rosters are being finalized for the fall. Here is a look at the 10 biggest offensive linemen to hit the transfer portal this offseason.

1. KADYN PROCTOR, Alabama

Whether Proctor’s journey is a one-off or will foreshadow what could be ahead in the portal, the five-star started every game at left tackle for Alabama as a freshman last season but then hit the portal when former coach Nick Saban retired.

The Pleasant Hill (Iowa) Southeast Polk native transferred to Iowa only to spend a few months there before he decided to transfer back to the Crimson Tide.

*****

2. LANCE HEARD, Tennessee

A five-star offensive tackle from Monroe (La.) Neville, Heard played in 12 games as a freshman and looked like he would be a future piece of LSU’s offensive line in the coming years but he unexpectedly decided to hit the portal after the season.

Tennessee and Oklahoma became the main front-runners for Heard, the third-best OL following Proctor and Miami’s Francis Mauigoa in the 2023 Rivals250, and the Vols won out.

*****

3. CAYDEN GREEN, Missouri

Ranked as the third-best offensive guard in the 2023 class, Green has the length and versatility to play outside or inside in college and he showed that ability during one season at Oklahoma. He started five games and looked like a big-time piece to the Sooners’ offensive line in the coming years.

But the Lee’s Summit (Mo.) North standout decided to transfer to Missouri, which has loaded up on both lines in the transfer portal this year.

4. PARKER BRAILSFORD, Alabama

A major part at mainly center but also right guard for the best offensive line unit in college football last season at Washington, Brailsford followed his coach from the Huskies to Alabama when coach Kalen DeBoer left for Tuscaloosa. Now the rubber meets the road: At 6-foot-2 and 275 pounds, will massive SEC defensive linemen have their way with Brailsford in the middle or will he continue to prove he’s one of the better linemen in the country?

*****

5. GEIREAN HATCHETT, Oklahoma

Oklahoma lost a lot of important offensive linemen – Green and Savion Byrd arguably leading the way – from 2023 whether to the NFL or to the portal so it was important for coach Brent Venables, position coach Bill Bedenbaugh and the staff to load up in recruiting and the portal.

It was extra important to do that as well as the Sooners are focused on getting bigger and stronger up front with the transition to the SEC. Hatchett was bugged by injuries last season but the four-star has talent and experience coming from Washington so he could be a big addition.

SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH OKLAHOMA FANS AT OUINSIDER.COM

*****

6. BRANSON HICKMAN, Oklahoma

The SMU graduate was a low three-star prospect coming out of high school, but started his final 33 games with the Mustangs and has more than 2,400 snaps under his belt. Oklahoma needs to restock its offensive line and Hickman could be at the front of the line to start at center.

*****

7. JASON ZANDAMELA, Florida

A talented offensive lineman who still needs some refinement, the four-star originally from Mozambique played at Clearwater (Fla.) Clearwater Academy International and then picked USC as he didn’t have solid roots and could play his college ball anywhere.

Or so he thought.

After one season, Zandamela wanted to return to Florida and the Gators beat out UCF for his services.

*****

8. TYLER JOHNSON, Colorado

A top-100 prospect in the 2019 Rivals250, Johnson originally signed with Texas. He will be coming to Colorado from Houston after playing more than 700 snaps this past season.

The Buffaloes are once again remaking their roster with more than 40 portal additions but the nine new players along the offensive line are most important since Colorado basically gave up running the ball last season.

Quarterback Shedeur Sanders was hit too much and the Buffs couldn’t run things so additions such as Johnson are huge.

SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH COLORADO FANS AT CUSPORTSREPORT.COM

*****

9. BRYCE FOSTER, TBD

Foster was a five-star prospect and the second-best offensive guard in the 2021 Rivals250 but he has yet to back up that potential as things fell apart toward the end of his Texas A&M career. Injuries were a problem for Foster and according to reports he was absent from spring practices, which caused coach Mike Elko to cut him.

Foster needs a fresh start because he’s powerful and has talent on the inside and a recent visit to USC makes things interesting.

*****

10. EASTON KILTY, Kansas State

Kansas State lost four of its starting five along the offensive line so a big rebuild was needed. Landing Kilty from North Dakota was a huge addition – literally. At 6-foot-5 and 305 pounds, Kilty is big and physical, and started 35 games at his former school. He brings plenty of experience and toughness to a team that needs a functional offensive line.

NFL stars express support for Harrison Butker amid speech drama

0

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker received support from his teammate Chris Jones and former wide receiver Cole Beasley amid drama over his commencement speech.

Butker came under fire for his address to Benedictine College graduates over the weekend, which appeared to be rooted in his Christian values. Jones and Beasley were two of the few players in the league or related to the NFL to express support.

“I love you @buttkicker7! My brotha,” Jones wrote on X in response to a petition going around to urge the Chiefs to release the kicker.

When an X user wondered whether Jones would delete the post, the defensive tackle said, “Negative.”

Beasley, who retired from the NFL last season after a short stint with the New York Giants, wrote he was “with (Butker).”

The Super Bowl champion kicker also appeared to get some support from Gracie Hunt, the daughter of Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt. She appeared on “Fox & Friends” on Friday and was asked about his remarks.

“Well, I can only speak from my own experience, which is I’ve had the most incredible mom who had the ability to stay home and be with us as kids growing up. And I understand that there are many women out there who can’t make that decision. But for me and my life, I know it was really formative and in shaping me and my siblings into who we are,” she said.

When asked whether she understood where Butker was coming from, she agreed.

Premier League 2023-24 nearing all-time scoring record

0

A Premier League goal-scoring record will almost certainly be smashed this weekend as the season reaches its climax.

With 10 matches to be played on Sunday, there have been 1,209 goals scored so far this season at an average of 3.27 per game.

Thirteen more are needed to match the all-time Premier League record of 1,222 from the inaugural 1992-93 season when there were 22 teams rather than the current 20.

With the fewest amount of goals for a final round of fixtures standing at 21 in 1997-98, this year’s campaign looks like being the most prolific for forwards.

Crystal Palace Vs Aston Villa Preview And Prediction

0

While the Premier League title race might be settled, there’s still plenty to play for as teams vie for a top 10 finish. One such clash is set between Crystal Palace and Aston Villa at Selhurst Park on May 19th.

Match Preview

Crystal Palace head into the weekend sitting in 12th place with 46 points. Meanwhile, Aston Villa are in 4th place with 68 points, looking to secure a strong finish.

The Eagles come into this match buoyed by a solid 3-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

They took the lead in the 26th minute and quickly doubled it just two minutes later.

Although Wolves managed to pull one back in the 66th minute, Palace sealed the win with a third goal in the 73rd minute.

This win means Crystal Palace are unbeaten in their last six Premier League matches, with victories over Newcastle, Manchester United,West Ham, and Liverpool, along with a draw against Fulham.

Palace have been formidable at home, remaining unbeaten in five of their last six matches across all competitions.

They’ve won their last three home Premier League games and have seen over 2.5 goals in seven of their last eight home league fixtures.

Aston Villa travel to Selhurst Park following a dramatic 3-3 draw with Liverpool.

After conceding in the 2nd minute, Villa equalized 10 minutes later.

Liverpool regained the lead before halftime and extended it in the second half, but Villa fought back, scoring twice in the final five minutes to snatch a point.

Despite this spirited performance, Villa have not won any of their last five matches, with defeats to Olympiakos in the Europa Conference League and a 1-0 loss to Brighton in the Premier League.

However, Aston Villa have been resilient on the road, going unbeaten in six of their last eight away league matches. Both teams have scored in four of their last six away games.

Team News & Updates:

Palace will be without the suspended Naouirou Ahamada and have several players in the treatment room, including Jefferson Lerma, Matheus França, Rob Holding, Sam Johnstone, and Nathan Ferguson.

Villa will miss injured players Nicolò Zaniolo, Jacob Ramsey, and Tyrone Mings. Additionally, there are fitness doubts over Alex Moreno, Matty Cash, and Morgan Rogers.

Prediction

With both teams likely satisfied with their season endings, we can expect an open and entertaining game.

Given Aston Villa’s strong overall performance this season, we predict they will take maximum points, but not without a fight from Crystal Palace.

Expect both teams to score in what promises to be a thrilling encounter.

Caitlin Clark, Fever teammates’ mental toughness questioned after loss

Indiana Fever head coach Christie Sides put Caitlin Clark and the rest of her team on notice following the team’s 102-66 loss to the New York Liberty on Thursday night.

Sides told reporters after the game the team needs to be tougher mentally.

“If somebody keeps punching you, you’ve got to be able to respond to it,” Sides said, via Athlon Sports. “You’ve gotta give some of that back. And that’s where we are. We’ve got to get to another level of mental toughness.

“We just have to get better. More mentally tough.”

Frustrations grew for the Fever as the team committed 13 turnovers. Fever forward Aliyah Boston and Liberty star Jonquel Jones battled underneath the basket all game long. Indiana also missed crucial shots in the third quarter when the team was getting back into the game.

Indiana shot 36.7% from the floor, including 26.3% from 3-point range.

Caitlin Clark had nine points, seven rebounds, six assists and three turnovers. She didn’t speak to reporters after the game.

“I have great perspective of everything, and I think the same is true of my college career,” she said before the game. “There were some moments that were absolutely amazing, and there were some moments where I was not happy with how I played and how I performed and how my team performed. But that’s just life. That’s just basketball.”

Bayer Leverkusen Vs Augsburg Preview And Prediction

0

As the Bundesliga season reaches its climax, all eyes are on Bayer Leverkusen and Augsburg as they gear up for a thrilling showdown.

Leverkusen’s unbeaten streak hangs on the edge against Augsburg’s determination to upset the odds.

Match Preview

Leverkusen have had an extraordinary campaign, arguably one of the best in European football history, and definitely the finest in the German top flight.

Their performance has been so outstanding that it draws comparisons to Leicester City’s miraculous Premier League triumph in 2015/16.

This season, Leverkusen have remained unbeaten in all competitions, recently securing a dramatic 2-2 draw against Roma after trailing 2-0, pushing their unbeaten streak to an impressive milestone.

They are on the verge of becoming the first team in European top flight history to surpass 50 games unbeaten.

Leverkusen clinched their first-ever Bundesliga title with a record of 27 wins and six draws in 33 games.

They have been dominant, scoring 87 goals—second only to Bayern Munich’s 92.

Defensively, they have been solid too, with only Inter Milan and Real Madrid boasting better records than their 23 goals conceded.

Xabi Alonso’s team needs to avoid defeat against Augsburg on the final day to stay unbeaten in the league.

Additionally, they are set to face Atalanta in the Europa League final and Kaiserslautern in the DFB-Pokal final.

Winning these matches would see them achieve the unprecedented feat of going unbeaten across all three competitions, extending their streak to 52 games.

Considering Kaiserslautern’s lowly position in the 2. Bundesliga, Leverkusen are expected to win the DFB-Pokal comfortably.

Augsburg have little at stake in this match.

They are safe from relegation and out of contention for European spots, sitting four points behind with just three left to play for.

Their season has been underwhelming, managing only 10 wins in the Bundesliga.

Currently, they are on a worrying winless run, having suffered heavy defeats to Borussia Dortmund (5-1), Werder Bremen (3-0), and Eintracht Frankfurt (3-1).

Prediction & Analysis:

In what promises to be a captivating duel, Leverkusen is favored to secure another win with over 2.5 goals expected. Augsburg faces an uphill battle against the relentless Leverkusen attack.

Ranking The 10 Biggest Decommitments Of The 2025 Recruiting Cycle

0

With the addition of Dakorien Moore’s decommitment from LSU on Thursday night, there have already been some major prospects in the 2025 class who have backed off their pledges heading into the month of June.

Here is a look at the 10 highest-profile decommitments so far this recruiting cycle based on the 2025 class rankings:

MORE: Ten most intriguing visits this weekend

1. DAKORIEN MOORE

Dakorien Moore

Dakorien Moore (Rivals.com)

RELATED: No. 1 WR Dakorien Moore decommits from LSU

The five-star receiver from Duncanville, Texas, committed to LSU last summer, was thrilled to play alongside five-star QB Bryce Underwood and five-star RB Harlem Berry, be reunited with high school teammate Caden Durham and while others were making a push it seemed like the Tigers had Moore locked up.

That was not the case as on Thursday night, Moore backed off his pledge to LSU ahead of his weekend visit to Oregon. Ohio State and Texas have also been pushing hard as well.

*****

2. JUSTUS TERRY

The top-ranked defensive tackle in the class made an early commitment to Georgia and it was not a shocker at all. Terry is from small-town Manchester, Ga., and the Bulldogs targeted him early. That coaching staff has produced a bunch of elite players at his position that went on to the NFL.

But after a great visit to USC in late March, Terry flipped from Georgia to the Trojans in a very surprising move. Georgia is not giving up, though, and recently had Terry back in Athens.

*****

3. WINSTON WATKINS JR.

A very early Texas A&M commitment didn’t work out. And then Watkins committed to Colorado because of coach Deion Sanders but then backed off that pledge in November when the five-star receiver felt he was limiting his options by committing so early.

A whole swath of programs from Ohio State to Indiana, Ole Miss to Syracuse and everyone in between have shown interest in Watkins, who has slowed things down before making another pledge.

*****

4. JAIME FFRENCH

Two weeks before his decommitment, Ffrench said at the National Combine in San Antonio that he was locked in and happy with Alabama and wasn’t seriously looking at other programs. But then only a few days later, Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban announced his surprise retirement and four days after that, the four-star receiver was back on the market.

The Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin standout has Ohio State out front in his recruitment with Florida State and others involved.

*****

5. CHRIS EWALD JR.

Ewald backed off his pledge to Michigan just days after the Wolverines won the national championship with reports swirling that Jim Harbaugh‘s departure for the NFL was imminent. There were rumors for months that the Ewald was looking closer to home with Auburn, Florida State and Miami as the main contenders.

The Hurricanes have now emerged as the lead player here and it wouldn’t be surprising if he ended up right at home in Coral Gables.

*****

6. BLAKE WOODBY

RELATED: Rivals250 DB Blake Woodby decommits from Ohio State, sets visits

On Thursday, Woodby backed off his pledge to Ohio State that he made in the fall as the Buckeyes still have the best defensive back class in the country with commitments from five-star cornerbacks Devin Sanchez and Na’eem Offord along with a host of others.

It didn’t take long for top programs to come after the four-star cornerback from Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances as Cincinnati, Auburn, Florida and UCF offered just hours following his decommitment. Many others have already reached out.

*****

7. JAVION HILSON

When Nick Saban shockingly retired from Alabama, Hilson did not just reopen his recruitment but he flipped his pledge from the Crimson Tide to Florida State. His father is a Seminole fan and it’s relatively close to home plus Mike Norvell‘s program is definitely trending up.

But Alabama is absolutely not giving up on getting the Cocoa, Fla., four-star defensive end back in the fold. Hilson was back in Tuscaloosa in March, Alabama sent defensive coordinator Kane Wommack and position coach Freddie Roach to Cocoa in recent days and Hilson is taking an official there in June. This one could end up being a real battle.

*****

8. MICAH DEBOSE

From the beginning of DeBose’s recruitment, the expectation was that Alabama would eventually land the four-star who can play offensive tackle or guard but that still might not be the case even after a decommitment from Georgia.

The Prichard (Ala.) Vigor standout committed to the Bulldogs last January and his pledge lasted nearly a year but he backed off it a few days before Christmas. LSU has emerged as the main contender for Debose but the Crimson Tide are right there battling as well.

*****

9. ZION GRADY

Grady’s commitment to Alabama lasted about two months – and probably would have lasted way longer if Nick Saban didn’t retire. But Saban is gone and the four-star defensive end from Enterprise, Ala., backed off his pledge in January.

It looked like Auburn and Georgia would end up battling it out for Grady but no longer as the Bulldogs have slipped off that top list with the four-star now seriously considering Miami, Auburn, Ohio State, Florida State and Tennessee.

*****

10. ANQUON FEGANS

Last May, Fegans committed to USC shortly after his brother, Tre’Quon, announced he would be transferring there from Alabama. But his brother hit the transfer portal and by late August the four-star safety from Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson was back on the market as well.

Auburn is the program to beat in his recruitment now and it would be a surprise if the Tigers don’t wrap him up.

Clemson, Ole Miss and others are also involved.

The video showed Scheffler in handcuffs and being led to a police vehicle.

ESPN reported that Scheffler drove past a police officer in his SUV with markings on the door indicating that it was a PGA Championship vehicle. The officer screamed at him to stop and then attached himself to the car until Scheffler stopped his vehicle about 10 yards later. Darlington characterized it as a “misunderstanding with traffic flow” as authorities were investigating a traffic fatality earlier in the morning.

“Scheffler was then walked over to the police car, placed in the back, in handcuffs, very stunned about what was happening, looked toward me as he was in those handcuffs and said, ‘Please help me,’” Darlington said on ESPN’s “SportsCenter.” “He very clearly did not know what was happening in the situation. It moved very quickly, very rapidly, very aggressively.”

An officer told Darlington, “Right now, he’s going to jail.”

“He’s going to jail, and there ain’t nothing you can do about it,” the officer added.

Scheffler was booked into the Louisville Department of Corrections later Friday. He was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer (a felony), criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic.
