Rivals Five-Star: Northeast Prospects That Can Boost Ranking At Event

0

The Rivals Five-Star is June 25-26 in Jacksonville, and the top high school football prospects from across the country will compete against each other in the summer’s marquee event. Many of these competitors are known quantities after competing at other events, but others have had fewer opportunities against elite competition and will have a chance to boost their stock.

Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Ryan O’Bleness spotlights five of these prospects below.

THIS SERIES: Five Southeast prospects | Florida prospects | Mid-South | Midwest

BEST OF THE RIVALS CAMP SERIES: Top 10 quarterbacks | Top 10 running backs | Top 10 wide receivers | Top 10 tight ends | Top 10 offensive linemen

ROAD TO JACKSONVILLE: Roster | Rivals Five-Star set for Jacksonville

Michael Carroll

Michael Carroll (Nick Lucero/Rivals.com)

Carroll, who recently committed to Alabama due to his strong relationship with offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic, head coach Kalen DeBoer and others, will have the opportunity in Jacksonville to prove why he is one of the best offensive linemen in 2025 class.

The 6-foot-6, 298-pound Carroll already ranks in the Rivals250 at No. 185 overall and in the top 20 for offensive tackles in his class. But he will have a chance to potentially break into the top 15 or so at his position and perhaps even the top 150 in the country with a strong performance.

Carroll, a first-team All-State Class 6A selection as a junior in 2023, has the versatility to play on the interior or on the outside as a tackle. He often lines up at guard for Central Bucks East High School and can get out and really move as a puller. Rivals’ analysts will be watching Carroll closely at the Five-Star event to see which position he projects best at once he reaches the college level.

The Doylestown, Pa., native has a strong pedigree, as his father, Michael Sr., played linebacker for Penn State and his mother, Letitia, played basketball at Michigan State. He now has the chance to carve out his own path in Tuscaloosa for the Crimson Tide.

Jabree Coleman

Jabree Coleman (Adam Friedman/Rivals.com)

Coleman, who was formerly committed to Georgia from July 2022 until December 2023, has official visits set for North Carolina and Michigan State. He was also previously scheduled for an official visit with Penn State, but with three running backs already committed to the Nittany Lions, Coleman is keeping his options open.

The Philadelphia product currently ranks as the No. 125 overall prospect, No. 4 player in the state of Pennsylvania and No. 9 running back in the 2025 cycle. He is approaching 30 scholarship offers, but after seeing his rankings dip just a bit in the most recent update, Coleman can show exactly why his standing can still be improved across the board with a good showing in Jacksonville.

The 6-foot-1, 201-pound Coleman has good size as a tailback and is a patient runner with good vision. He runs through contact, but he is also elusive and can make would-be tacklers miss in space.

Coleman had a huge junior season for Imhotep Institute Charter High School in 2023 with 208 carries for 1,585 yards (7.6 yards per carry) and 28 rushing touchdowns, plus two receiving touchdowns. He also made an impact on special teams as a returner.

*****

Another running back who can improve his standing in Jacksonville, Davidson already ranks as the top player in the state of Virginia and comes into the event listed very high nationally. With that said, Davidson now has the chance to cement himself in the top 50 or so in the 2025 class and perhaps break into the top three in the running back rankings.

Davidson has incredible speed and has an accomplished background in track. However, Davidson has shown the ability to break tackles with his power as well. His game is well-rounded.

The longtime Clemson commit had an incredible junior season, and was named the Virginia High School League Class 3 Offensive Player of the Year.

The four-star running back rushed for 2,752 yards and amassed 46 total touchdowns (43 rushing) in 2023. He helped lead Liberty Christian Academy to a VHSL Class 3 state championship.

Jahmir Joseph

Jahmir Joseph (Adam Friedman/Rivals.com)

Joseph, out of Saint Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, N.J., will take an official visit to Penn State this weekend and then has an official visit scheduled set with South Carolina during the weekend of June 21. He already has taken official visits to Stanford and Notre Dame as well. Then, toward the end of the month, Joseph will compete at the Rivals Five-Star event.

Already the No. 2 player in the state of New Jersey behind only four-star wide receiver Quincy Porter, Joseph also currently ranks as the No. 12 cornerback and No. 138 prospect overall in the 2025 cycle. In Jacksonville, he’ll have a shot to impress analysts even further and possibly move up into the top 10 in the position rankings.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Joseph has some positional versatility as a cornerback or safety. He is a physical defensive back who always seem to be around the ball, making interceptions or pass breakups. Joseph also shows the ability to come up in run support and make strong tackles on running backs or quarterbacks. His closing speed and pursuit angles — tracking down ball carriers in the open field — also stands out in his game.

Joseph is also a menace on special teams, as he has blocked multiple punts and kicks, and has also kicked for Saint Joseph’s.

Trent Wilson

Trent Wilson (Rivals.com)

Wilson, a 6-foot-3, 275-pound defensive tackle with good length out of Wise High School in Upper Marlboro, Md., will have a chance to prove why he is one of the top interior defenders in the country at the Rivals Five-Star event.

He is already a top-five player at his position and top-three prospect in Maryland, while ranking 130th nationally, but a powerful performance in Jacksonville could move him up even further in the rankings.

Wilson, who has nearly 30 scholarship offers in total, committed to Oklahoma in April.

He is a powerful, athletic defensive lineman who shows excellent explosion out of his stance. He often fights off double teams to penetrate into opposing backfields, making plays as both a pass rusher and run defender. Wilson has the versatility to align in different techniques across the defensive line and make an impact.

SRB vs ENG, Euro 2024: England faces Serbia in opener with weakened defence

0

England faces the first test of its credentials as one of the Euro 2024 favourites when it launches its campaign against Serbia on Sunday, with injuries and illness adding to worries about an already depleted defence.

Coach Gareth Southgate – under pressure to win the first major men’s trophy since 1966 – must decide whether to risk centre half John Stones, who has only just overcome an injury and was isolated from the squad this week with a virus.

Left back Luke Shaw looks is set to miss the Group C opener in Gelsenkirchen as he recovers from a hamstring problem suffered in February.

Despite losing its final warm-up game 1-0 at home to Iceland a week ago, England boast one of the most potent attacks in Germany.

READ MORE: England at Euro 2024: Full squad, match timings, live streaming info, preview, team news

But it is in defence where England, which lost the Euro 2020 final to Italy in a shootout, looks less formidable.

Captain Harry Kane looks set to be flanked up front by in-form Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka with playmaker Jude Bellingham offering attacking threat from midfield.

Stalwart centre half Harry Maguire failed to make the squad due to injury and right-footed Kieran Trippier looks set to play on the left until Shaw can return.

Lewis Dunk is likely to make his first major tournament appearance in the middle of defence, possibly alongside fellow newcomer Ezri Konsa if Stones is not risked.

The patched-up backline will come up against an erratic Serbia with an experienced attack led by Aleksandar Mitrovic, who notched 28 goals in 28 matches in the Saudi Pro League and is a major threat in the air.

RELATED: Euro 2024 Group C: England starting from scratch in Southgate’s last dance

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic has scored 13 times for Serbia in 27 games and former Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic will also be joining the attacks.

Serbia are coached by Dragan Stojkovic, who as a player helped Yugoslavia reach the 1990 World Cup quarter-finals.

Pivotal to England’s hopes of minimising pressure on their backline will be Declan Rice, who is expected to play more as a midfield shield than he did in a stand-out campaign for Arsenal last season when they were runners-up in the Premier League.

A big question is who Southgate picks to play alongside Rice with hard-running Conor Gallagher, 19-year-old Kobbie Mainoo and possibly the even less-tested Adam Wharton, 20, in the frame.

If England can establish a solid base, fans can expect flair from their frontline with exciting young talent in the form of Cole Palmer, Anthony Gordon and Eberechi Eze all poised to feature from the bench.

Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkely announced Friday that he intends to retire from broadcast television at the conclusion of the 2024-2025 NBA season, which will mark the end of his 25 years as an analyst.

The shocking decision comes amid uncertainty surrounding the NBA’s media landscape.

Barkley, 61, made the revelation on NBA TV following Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Friday night. He said that regardless of whether TNT is able to continue broadcasting games beyond next season, he intends to “pass on the baton.”

“I’ve been thinking, guys. I want to say this because you guys are my family. I really love TNT, all the people who work here, NBA Television – you guys have been great to me for 24 years. I just want to say thank you to my entire NBA family. I love you guys,” Barkley began.

“There’s been a lot of noise around our network the last few months. And I just want to say, I’ve talked to all the other networks, but I ain’t going nowhere other than TNT. But, I have made the decision myself, no matter what happens, next year is going to be my last year on television.”

CHARLES BARKLEY WON’T LET CORPORATE HONCHOS SILENCE HIM OVER NBA RIGHTS DEAL: ‘I CAN TALK TO WHO I WANT TO’

“And I just want to say thank you to my NBA family, you guys have been great to me,” he continued.  “My heart is full with joy and gratitude, but I’m going to pass the baton at the end of next year. I hope the NBA stays with TNT, but for me personally, I wanted you guys to hear it from me personally because I’m not doing anymore interviews.”

Barkley has become a fixture on NBA game night. Still, the future of “Inside the NBA” remains unknown, as Warner Bros. Discovery, TNT’s parent company, vies for media rights beyond next season.

The current deals with ABC-ESPN and Turner Sports expire after next season and the NBA has been talking with NBC, ESPN and Amazon, among other networks and platforms, about what comes next.

But Barkley’s future won’t be impacted by those decisions.

“Next year, I’m just going to retire after 25 years and I just wanted to say thank you and I wanted y’all to hear it from me first,” Barkley said, adding that he’ll likely call on TNT’s Vince Carter or Jamal Crawford to take his place.

Paris Olympics: Some Russians make the cut but others fail vetting process

0

The first batch of Russian and Belarusian athletes have been cleared to compete at next month’s Paris Olympics, with a total of 25 making the cut but others failing an International Olympic Committee vetting process over the war in Ukraine, the IOC said on Saturday.

The IOC said that in some sports Russia and Belarus would have athletes to fill their allocated quotas, including road cycling and trampolining, but in others such as taekwondo no qualified athlete from either country had met eligibility criteria after vetting to be given a spot.

A total of 25 athletes from Russia and Belarus were cleared for 41 quota places and those left free will now be distributed to other countries.

In total, Russia cleared 14 athletes for 24 allocated spots, while 11 Belarusian athletes passed the process for 17 spots.

“The Panel was in a position to benefit from new information from various sources, in particular official lists of athletes affiliated with sports clubs of the military and the security forces published on official websites in Russia and Belarus,” the IOC said.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the IOC initially recommended a ban from international competitions of athletes from Russia and its ally Belarus, but it has since allowed them to qualify for the Paris Olympics as neutrals.

Each qualified athlete must undergo the vetting process by a three-member panel appointed by the IOC to make sure they meet eligibility criteria.

Not having actively supported the war in Ukraine and not having been contracted to any military or security agency are among those criteria.

The IOC has said it expects to see about 36 Russian and 22 Belarusian athletes competing as neutrals in Paris.

The maximum number, depending on qualification standards and country quotas, and which is unlikely to be reached, would be 54 and 28 respectively.

It is widely expected within the IOC that Russia will appeal against this decision at the Court of Arbitration of Sport.

ISL: Mumbai City FC signs forward Noufal P.N. on a three-year deal

0

Mumbai City FC on Saturday announced the signing of Noufal P.N. The attacker joins the Islanders on a three-year contract that will see him stay at the club until the end of the 2027 season.

The 23-year-old began his footballing journey with Basco FC before securing a transfer to his hometown club, Gokulam Kerala FC, in 2022. The Kerala native quickly made his mark, cementing his place as a starter through match-winning assists and goal contributions.

In his time at Gokulam Kerala FC, the pacy winger notched up 53 appearances, netting five goals and providing 14 assists, making him a valuable asset to the Islanders’ attacking unit in the upcoming seasons.

Noufal has showcased his skillsets across various tournaments in India including the I-League, Kalinga Super Cup, and Durand Cup.

“Mumbai City FC is one of the most successful clubs in India and I am excited to join them. It’s a dream come true for me to don the prestigious jersey and play at the biggest competitions,” the young player said.

“We were keeping a close eye on Noufal for a while, and I am delighted to welcome him to Mumbai City FC. His remarkable pace and skilful footwork in setting up goals for his teammates make him a valuable addition to our team,” head coach Petr Kratky said.

Millwall goalkeeper Matija Sarkic passes away at 26

0

Millwall and Montenegro goalkeeper Matija Sarkic passed away on Saturday at the age of 26, the Championship club confirmed.

Sarkic fell ill in his home country while on international duty. Montenegrin daily newspaper Vijesti reported Sarkic died in an apartment in Budva early in the morning.

“Everyone at the club sends their love and condolences to Matija’s family and friends at this immensely sad time,” Millwall said in a statement.

“The club will make no further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Matija’s family is respected.”

“Our dear Matija, we will miss you and your cheerful spirit, your work ethic and your great defending,” the Montenegro Football Association (FSCG) said in a statement, describing Sarkic as an “always smiling guy”.

“On behalf of European football, our deepest condolences go to Matija’s friends, family and everybody who knew him. Rest in peace, Matija,” governing body UEFA said in a statement.

Sarkic made nine saves in Montenegro’s 2-0 defeat to Belgium in a friendly last Wednesday and was named man of the match for his outstanding performance.

Born in Grimsby, England, Sarkic played for Aston Villa and Belgian side Anderlecht at youth level. He made 33 appearances for Millwall after joining in August 2023 from Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Olympic hopeful Fred Richard has plenty more Games than 2024 on mind: ‘Minimum three, maybe four’

0

Gymnast Fred Richard is all but likely headed to Paris in July — he’ll officially find out his fate later this month.

The 20-year-old from Stoughton, Massachusetts, earned a gold medal at the national championships earlier this year and is now focused on making the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The career lifespan of a gymnast is rather short, but Richard wants to beat the clock.

“I’m looking to go minimum three, maybe four. Gymnastics is a lifestyle right now. I think I’m gonna keep doing this for a while. 2028 is going to be huge. L.A. Olympics, that’s the one that I want to be destroying everybody at. I got four years to really give everything to the sport,” Richard told Fox News Digital in a recent interview.

Four Olympics would take him to the 2036 Olympics at the age of 36. Good thing he’s a partner with Celsius, the energy drink that is constantly getting swiped off shelves everywhere.

“I feel like when I see Celsius online, they’re highlighting that athlete lifestyle. I know there’s energy drinks for gamers — I just got that vibe that Celsius is for the athlete. And then, of course, looking at what it actually contains in it, making sure there’s no added sugar. I feel good drinking it,” Richard said.

Richard joins fellow Michigan Wolverine Blake Corum and Olympian Noah Lyles as part of Celsius’ stacked roster. And just like those two, the 200 milligrams of caffeine is a perfect pick-me-up.

“When my training gets more intense, there’s a couple times a week where I’m a lot more tired, but I still have to get through that practice and get through my assignments, then I’m taking it for extra energy. That extra boost on those days where I really need it,” he said.

OLYMPIC HOPEFUL GYMNAST FRED RICHARD DISCUSSES SIMONE BILES’ REVENGE TOUR, PRESSURE ON MEN AND WOMEN IN SPORT

Richard has been told he’s a likely Olympian since he was 10 years old, which is some pressure to put on a fifth grader. But he and his family have made plenty of sacrifices, and he wants it to be all worth it.

“It’d be huge. So many people have helped me get to this level in my life. It kind of feels like it’s come full circle,” Richard said. “I get to show that everything they did paid off. Everybody who has supported me is proud of me, but I want to go that extra mile, I want to get to the Olympic Games, pop off at the Olympic Games, and really show that the team that got me here, it all paid off.”

Of course, winning medals would be huge for Richard, but right now, he’s focused on just putting on a good performance and putting himself on the map.

“I like medals, so getting some of those would be pretty cool,” he said. “I think the biggest thing, though, that would make me feel like I won is everybody sees my performances and says, ‘wow, that kid’s gonna be something great.’ And then they follow me after that. Just go in there, tell the whole world I’m at the highest level.”

Pakistan Cricket Board to enforce two-NOCs policy strictly after flop show at T20 World Cup 2024

0

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will enforce its two-NOCs policy for T20 leagues strictly following the national team’s embarrassing performance and first-round exit in the T20 World Cup in the United States of America.

Pakistan’s elimination was confirmed on Friday when USA joined arch-rival India as the second team from Group A in the Super Eight round, following a washout at Lauderhill in Florida.

All players, who sign central and domestic contracts in Pakistan cricket, have to adhere to a clause which states that a player can only be issued a NOC for a maximum of two overseas leagues besides playing in the Pakistan Super League in a year.

The board has yet not issued any NOCs to youngsters Azam Khan and Saim Ayub to play in the Caribbean Premier League even though both were retained by their respective teams for this season.

Both Azam and Saim are part of Pakistan’s World Cup squad.

READ MORE | T20 World Cup 2024: New Zealand ace Trent Boult confirms ongoing edition will be his last

“The other players have also been given a clear message that the two NOC’s rule applies to both centrally and domestic contracted players and the board also reserves the right to turn down any NOC request from any player,” an official source in the board said.

The board also holds the right to refuse any NOC if it feels the player’s workload and fitness is at stake and he is required to play at home.

The source said that recently in the case of Pakistan leg-spinner Usama Mir, who signed a contract for the Vitality Blast and The Hundred in England, was told he has already played his quota of two leagues this year.

“Mir took the argument that since he was free of any international commitments and there was no domestic event he should be allowed to play in England, he was told in clear terms this is not for him but for the board to decide,” the source said.

The board has also recently made it clear to all other cricket boards and their franchises organising their T20 leagues that until a player(s) is able to produce a PCB-issued NOC, they would be signing him at their own risk.

T20 World Cup 2024: Rampant Australia wary of Scotland threat; Pakistan takes on Ireland in dead rubber

0

Gros Islet

A rampant Australia will be wary of Scotland threat when the two teams clash in a crucial Group B encounter at the T20 World Cup 2024 here with the outcome set to influence Super Eight qualification.

With Australia having already booked one spot for the Super Eight from Group B, Scotland and England are in race for the second position.

Scotland will go through if it beats Australia or even if their contest is washed out, but in case of a defeat to the Mitchell Marsh-led side and England winning against Namibia hours earlier, the Scots would miss the bus.

For England, a win over Namibia is a must and if the Australians do it a favour by beating Scotland, chances will only brighten up.

A washout in England-Namibia game in the same group will see Scotland go through.

Australia has been in top-form with hardly any serious concern. Nathan Ellis is expected to continue featuring in its playing XI since the Australians tend to rest one of its big three fast bowlers — Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc — in such contests.

Hazlewood had earlier mentioned about Australia manipulating its approach against Scotland to keep England threat at bay, but Jos Buttler’s team have done themselves a massive favour by improving their Net Run Rate immensely with a dominant victory over Oman.

For the Scots, beating former champions Australia is ‘a hell of an opportunity’ in Michael Leask’s words and they would want to give their best, or maybe even hope that rain gods do them a favour, since they are still second on the points table with five points compared to England’s three.

Squads:

Australia: Mitchell Marsh (c), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis (wk), Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade (wk), David Warner and Adam Zampa.

Scotland: Richie Berrington (c), Matthew Cross, Brad Currie, Chris Greaves, Oli Hairs, Jack Jarvis, Michael Jones, Michael Leask, Brandon McMullen, George Munsey, Safyaan Sharif, Chris Sole, Charlie Tear, Mark Watt, Brad Wheal.

Pakistan eyes consolatory win over Ireland but rain threat looms

Babar Azam’s Pakistan will look to restore some pride when they take on a under-firing Ireland in its final Group A match at Lauderhill in Florida on Sunday.

With arch-rivals India and USA sealing the two spots for the Super Eight stage from Group A, Pakistan has been confined to some introspection and relook at the team’s T20 game. But before all that, Babar’s side will have to first thwart the Irish challenge.

Ireland had beaten Pakistan comprehensively in a bilateral game in days leading to the T20 World Cup and the contest — if at all it happens — could see both the teams in green fighting hard for a final laugh.

ALSO READ | Full list of teams eliminated from Super Eight qualification; Pakistan joins New Zealand in shock exits

Ireland are the only team without a win in Group A and it will be inspired to sign off with its account opened, riding on Pakistan’s lack of confidence, its trait of being fallible at crucial stages, and a unified effort.

But all that will come to fore only if the rain stays away to allow play to happen as Florida has witnessed a flood-like station amid heavy downpour in the last few days.

In fact, co-hosts USA’s unexpected qualification happened only after its contest here against Ireland was washed out, which had also ensured Pakistan’s exit in the first round.

Squads:

Pakistan: Babar Azam (c), Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan (wk), Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Usman Khan.

Ireland: Paul Stirling (c), Mark Adair, Ross Adair, Andy Balbirnie, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Graham Hume, Josh Little*, Barry McCarthy, Neil Rock (wk), Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker (wk), Ben White, Craig Young.
