FIFA seeks ‘legal expertise’ before decision on Israel soccer ban proposal

0

FIFA postponed its decision on a proposal to suspend the Israeli soccer team from international soccer because of its ongoing war against Hamas, to seek a “legal assessment.”

The proposal came from the Palestine Football Association who are against the war. Israel launched its attack on Hamas following the Oct. 7 terror attack in the country that left hundreds dead. FIFA will make its decision on the proposal within two months.

“Now, due to the obvious sensitivity of these matters, FIFA will mandate as of now independent legal expertise to analyze and assess the three requests made by the Palestinian Football Association and ensure that the statutes and regulations of FIFA are applied in the correct way in order to ensure a fair and due process,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said. “This legal assessment will have to allow for inputs and claims of both member associations. The results and the recommendations … will be forwarded to the FIFA council.

“Due to the urgency of the situation, an extraordinary FIFA Council will be convened and will take place before July 20 to review the results of the legal assessment and to take the decisions that are appropriate.”

The Palestine Football Association called for “appropriate sanctions with immediate effect, against Israel teams.” The proposal claimed Israel violated international laws and that “all the football infrastructure in Gaza has been either destroyed, or seriously damaged, including the historic stadium of Al-Yarmuk.”

The association’s leader, Jibril Rajoub, said on Friday that “the Palestinian people, including the Palestinian football family, are enduring an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.” He claimed that 193 soccer players had died as a result of the war.

Infantino said a vote couldn’t have happened Friday because it had to be dealt with by FIFA’s governing council.

“I do not want to divide our 211 member countries,” he said. “I have a responsibility as president to apply the statutes of FIFA and its regulations, whatever my personal conviction on these and other terrible matters around the world.”

He said at the FIFA council meeting on Wednesday that all 37 member nations had unanimously agreed to condemn the violence that has taken place.

‘Time to move aside’: Joe Hart at peace with retirement decision

0

Joe Hart said it was the right time to hang up his gloves as he prepares to retire at the end of the season, with the former England goalkeeper receiving an emotional tribute during Celtic’s final home game of the season on Saturday.

Hart, who joined Celtic on a three-year deal from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021, was instrumental in the club’s march to a third straight Premiership title, making 37 appearances in the league and 48 across all competitions.

The 37-year-old will retire having made over 700 appearances in club football while also earning 75 caps for England.

“It’s a sad day, but it’s the right time,” Hart told Sky Sports after Celtic lifted the Premiership trophy.

“I got this opportunity which I couldn’t turn down. I didn’t know how it was going to play out… I got to a point in my life where I got an opportunity and I didn’t want to push that luck. I wanted to finish strong. I wanted to finish in this special place. It’s my time to move aside and let someone else have some fun… I feel fine but I just felt this was my moment. We’ve got one more week to go now,” he said.

Celtic fans unfurled a massive banner with the words “Super Joe Hart” and the veteran goalkeeper was seen holding back tears as he acknowledged the crowd.

Hart also wore the captain’s armband when skipper Callum McGregor was substituted but came off in the dying minutes to a standing ovation as he bid farewell to Celtic Park.

Hart was instrumental in Manchester City winning its first two Premier League titles in 2011-12 and 2013-14, but he lost his place in the squad when Pep Guardiola took over as manager.

Following loan spells at Torino and West Ham United, Hart moved to Burnley and Spurs before finishing his career at Celtic.

When asked if he would have regrets about retiring when he was still in fine form, Hart said, “Life’s about making decisions and I stand by them.”

Hart will have the chance to wrap up his career with one more trophy when Celtic play Rangers in the Scottish Cup final on May 25.

Fact Or Fiction: Texas Leads For Three Top-100 Wide Receivers

0

Rivals national recruiting analyst Marshall Levenson is joined by TrojanSports.com‘s Ryan Young, DeathValleyInsider.com‘s Jefferson Powell and OrangeBloods.com‘s Jason Suchomel to tackle three topics and determine whether they believe each statement is FACT or FICTION.

MORE FACT OR FICTION: Malachi Goodman is set to become a Rivals250 prospect

1. Texas leads for three top-100 WRs in Dakorien Moore, Jaime Ffrench and Kaliq Lockett.

Suchomel: FACT. This is a tricky one to answer. If we take them individually, I would call Texas the leader for each. Jaime Ffrench has said as much. It feels like Texas is definitely the team to beat for Dakorien Moore. Kaliq Lockett plays things close to the vest but I’d slightly favor Texas in that race. That being said, if we look at the group as a whole, it will probably be tough for Texas to reel in all three of them, especially after taking a four-man receiver class in 2024.

Levenson: FACT. I agree with everything Suchomel says here. On an individual basis, it would be hard to say any school other than Texas is leading for these elite prospects. What will be interesting, as Suchomel points out, is whether they can close on all of them. There is a chance that one of them could be deterred from joining a busy wide receiver class, especially going into a premier room in college football. The feeling would be Texas would like them all together with Moore being atop the wish list. There is no timeline for when they may start to pop off the board, but as it stands right now, Texas would be the likely choice for all three if they had to choose.

*****

2. LSU can still land the No. 1 class after losing Dakorien Moore.

Powell. FACT. There’s enough talent still on the books for the 2025 class that LSU is more than capable of making a strong push for the No. 1 overall class in 2025. Is losing Dakorien Moore a major blow to those efforts? Absolutely. But, it’s not quite time to fire up the trumpets and play “Taps” in honor of their fallen efforts just yet. The Tigers still have a strong core to their 2025 class, which includes five-stars Bryce Underwood and Harlem Berry and several other commits that could see some significant bumps over the next several months. Combine that with their current standing with some of the top prospects in the 2025 class and you can make a strong case for LSU that it’ll be, at the very least, in that discussion down the stretch.

Levenson. FICTION. Over the last several months, LSU’s dominant class has surrounded the names of Moore, Underwood and Berry. Now, outside of Underwood and Berry, LSU does not hold a commitment from any other top-100 prospects. To compete for the No. 1 class, it will likely need to land several prospects in the top 100, and likely in the top half of it. While there will be some elite prospects that LSU will be in the running for, I don’t see it landing enough to beat what Ohio State, Texas, Georgia and some others may finish with.

RELATED: Moore is the biggest decommitment in the 2025 class

*****

3. USC will lands 3+ Texas prospects for a third year in a row.

Riley Wormley

Riley Wormley (Nick Lucero/Rivals.com)

Young: FACT. Considering that would only require retaining the two current Lone Star State commits – RB Riley Wormley and DE Gus Cordova – and hitting on one more Texas target, I’ll play the odds and say there is another still to come given how aggressively the Trojans recruit the state. Last year, of the four signees from Texas, OL Makai Saina was a major surprise after his official visit and DL Carlon Jones emerged late in the cycle. Those official visit weekends are Lincoln Riley‘s impressive oceanfront estate have proven very effective in recent years, and with USC expected to host a number of Texas targets (WRs Daylan McCutcheon, Andrew Marsh and Emanuel Choice, S Jonah Williams, DL Xavier Ukpono, DE Chad Woodfork and LBs Max Granville and Riley Pettijohn), odds are the Trojans will reel at least one more in.

Levenson. FACT. Riley has shown since he arrived to USC that Texas will be among the top priorities in recruiting. With two already on the board in Wormley and Cordova, both of whom are expected to stick, only one more has to be added to continue the trend of at least three in each class. Young points out several names who are among the contenders to land in the class, but I also believe there will be some who are not yet being pursued who work their way into the picture. Just as the Trojans locked onto Carlon Jones late in the cycle last year, I suspect there may be something similar later this year. Riley wants to stress landing prospects in the Lone Star State, so he will look beyond the surface level names to do so.

Shohei Ohtani’s former Angels teammate accused of making illegal sports bets: report

0

David Fletcher, an MLB infielder who currently plays in the Atlanta Braves organization, reportedly bet on sports using the same bookmaker as Shohei Ohtani’s former trainer, Ippei Mizuhara.

Fletcher played for the Los Angeles Angels from 2018 to 2023 and was a teammate of Ohtani’s during that span. Ohtani and Fletcher both left the Angels following the 2023 season. Ohtani signed a massive contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the offseason, and Fletcher joined the Braves, later being optioned to their Triple-A affiliate.

Fletcher made bets through bookie Matthew Bowyer but never bet on baseball, ESPN reported Friday night. Colby Schultz, a friend of Fletcher’s who played in the Kansas City Royals’ organization from 2018 to 2020, reportedly placed bets on baseball games, including Angels games when Fletcher was on the team.

MLB, the Braves, Fletcher and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California declined to comment on the matter, ESPN reported. Schultz didn’t immediately respond to a message from Fox News Digital.

Fletcher previously noted that he and Ohtani were “good friends,” back on March 18.

According to the report, MLB players and employees can bet on sports other than baseball, but those who place wagers through illegal bookmakers could be punished by the commissioner’s office. Players who bet on baseball games they didn’t play in could be punished for a year, and those who bet on games they did play in could be permanently banned from the sport.

Ohtani was caught up in a betting scandal earlier this season as his former interpreter was accused of stealing money from the star baseball player’s bank account to pay off debts.

Mizuhara appeared in federal court on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to the charges as a formality in the case.

Shikhar Dhawan says Impact Player rule’s unavailability in T20 World Cup will make the difference

0

Shikhar Dhawan reckons that cricket has undergone a lot of change this year but he does not see mindboggling scores at the upcoming T20 World Cup like the Indian Premmier League (IPL) in the absence of Impact Player option.

The Impact Player rule which allows teams to play an extra batter or a bowler is believed to have bolstered the number of high scores in this IPL, with totals in excess of 250 being recorded as many as eight times.

The bowlers’ misery reignited the debate of creating a balance between the bat and the ball since wickets and conditions in IPL generally tend to favour batters.

“I feel as if the game itself has changed this year, which is why scores of 250 are being put on. The mindset has certainly changed,” Dhawan told PTI.

“But when you go into the World Cup which won’t have the Impact Player rule, the impact of it would be seen definitely. That is a differentiator and how we adapt to the conditions is what will matter the most.

“The mindset has changed after the introduction of this rule. When a batter in the middle knows that there is batting available till number 8 and 9, he is going to take the aggressive route which is why so many high scores are being made,” the aggressive Indian opener said.

He said India has a strong squad at its disposal for the T20 World Cup and that the players enjoy their game under Rohit Sharma.

“All bases have been covered. The team looks balanced and India have got a very good chance (of winning the title),” he said.

“Rohit is a seasoned captain and the boys are very happy and comfortable around him. We have got a very good and experienced side with amazing youngsters and we have a very good chance to win the World Cup,” Dhawan added.

Dhawan acknowledged Punjab Kings had a disappointing run in IPL this year, with the team failing to make the playoffs for the 10th year in a row.

The experienced left-handed batter entered IPL as Punjab Kings’ skipper but was sidelined due to a shoulder injury he suffered in early April.

Dhawan said losing experienced players to injuries can also impact teams heavily.

“I could play only five matches this year after which I got injured. We had won two matches until then. I stayed with the team and did my rehab, which is something I am doing even now. But the injury is serious and I will be out of action.

“Even the team could not do well. Whenever experienced players get injured, it impacts the team. But the boys gave their everything and it was unfortunate it did not go our way,” Dhawan said.

RR vs KKR, IPL 2024: Sangakkara optimistic about Guwahati pitch for crucial clash against Kolkata

0

Kumar Sangakkara, Rajasthan Royals’ Director of Cricket, feels that the track at his side’s ‘adopted home’ in Guwahati is better than it seemed during the previous fixture against Punjab Kings.

On the eve of the Indian Premier League’s last league game against table-topper Kolkata Knight Riders at the Barsapara Stadium, Sangakkara said, “I’m terrible at reading pitches. I leave that up to the curators, who know more than I do. I thought the last pitch was very good. Both sides did not bat as well as they would have wanted, especially us. I think we could have got 170-180, comfortably, so it’s not the fault of the pitch really.”

Both PBKS and RR representatives, Nathan Ellis and Shane Bond respectively, had remarked that the wicket had behaved slower than expected at the post-match press conference on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the KKR management has decided to keep its cards close to its chest regarding the potential replacement of wicketkeeper-batter Phil Salt, who’s returned to England on national duty.

Batter Ramandeep Singh said, “He has been an integral part of the campaign. I am sure whoever replaces him will also do well because all of us have been putting in the hard yards. The eleven will be announced at the toss tomorrow.”

1. Is Jordon Davison the top running back in 2025?

Jordon Davison

Jordon Davison

There are two five-star running backs in the 2025 class in Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei’s Jordon Davison and Metairie (La.) St. Martin’s Episcopal’s Harlem Berry and then a group of elite four-stars led by Penn State commit Alvin Henderson, who has put up insane numbers through his high school career at Elba, Ala.

All three of them are expected at the Rivals Five-Star later this summer at the Jacksonville Jaguars facility and the rankings could work themselves out then. But it might even happen sooner.

Davison has been great in pads the last two seasons at Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei sharing carries with Georgia signee Nate Frazier, but this year he should be the workhorse in the backfield. The five-star is above 220 pounds so he’s definitely a different kind of back than Berry and Henderson, who are built but are more electric with the ball in their hands and used more in the passing game.

It might end up being a matter of taste. Davison can be the NFL workload back while Berry and Henderson are more the electric make-you-miss players. But this summer could go a long way in determining final rankings.

2. What should be the order of the 2025 California QBs?

Akili Smith Jr.

Akili Smith Jr. (Nick Lucero/Rivals.com)

Texas A&M commit Husan Longstreet has a cannon. Oregon pledge Akili Smith Jr. has phenomenal size and the pedigree. Stanford commit Bear Bachmeier has the accuracy and comes from a family of Division I athletes. Four-star Madden Iamaleava learned under his five-star brother, Nico, and is now putting up huge numbers and has a ton of upside.

Those are some of the considerations when re-ranking the 2025 quarterbacks in California and whether any changes need to be made.

As for offseason work, Iamaleava has arguably had the best few months. Every time we see him – such as the Downey (Calif.) Warren Showcase – the four-star who’s visiting UCLA this weekend seems more confident, throws a beautiful ball and is carrying himself as one of the better quarterbacks in this class.

3. Is there another five-star in California?

The last time there was only one five-star in the California state rankings was in 2021 when defensive end Korey Foreman earned that ranking (although he has not played up to a five-star yet in his college career). That was also the recruiting cycle of Brock Bowers, who ended up as a four-star prospect out of Napa, Calif., and one ranking we will rue in the years to come.

Even though talented depth in the state has been trending down a little over the last few recruiting cycles, there are still usually a handful of five-stars in California. But this could be another case of a recruiting class that just doesn’t have that five-star level player.

Davison is the lone five-star right now and he’s a running back, definitely not a position of first-round value in the NFL Draft. Last recruiting cycle, there were some late additions after dominating performances in their senior seasons and all-star games, and that might be the case again in 2025.

*****

4. Should linemen lead the Nevada state rankings?

Douglas Utu

Douglas Utu

A vast majority of top players from the state of Nevada play at Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman, which could have the top team in the country this season, and an argument could be made that its three best players are all offensive linemen.

Five-star Douglas Utu leads the way and whether he stays at offensive tackle or moves inside to offensive guard, it almost doesn’t matter in terms of ranking because he’s been so dominant for so long and almost never loses a rep. But interior teammates SJ Alofaituli and Alai Kalaniuvalu have been phenomenal this offseason as well and impressed again at the recent Gorman showcase. Some say that Kalaniuvalu was the best of the best that night.

The question here is where to place four-star receiver Derek Meadows. The Gorman receiver, who has Notre Dame and others at the top of his recruitment, is all of 6-foot-6 and 195 pounds. He looked impressive at Battle Miami earlier this offseason, but he’s been sidelined the rest of the time with a hamstring injury.

The New Hampshire senate has passed a bill that would place limitations on transgender athletes.

The bill would ban transgender athletes in grades 5-12 from teams that align with their gender identity.

Supporters of the legislation said they wanted to protect girls from being injured by larger and stronger transgender athletes.

“When we talk about fairness and rights, we can’t cover every circumstance. And so in a very narrow way that I think to most of us is very clear, biological boys have an advantage over biological girls,” said Senate President Jeb Bradley, a Republican from Wolfeboro. “We’ll never be able to legislate total fairness. But what we can’t do is create rights for one at the expense of another.”

Meanwhile, Democrats who opposed the bill said it was based on fear mongering. Sen. Debra Altschiller, a Democrat from Stratham, said there are only five transgender girls in New Hampshire who are athletes.

“Those five girls are not a threat. They are the threatened,” she said. “While this gesture of protection may seem valiant, we say, ‘No thank you.’ If you really want to protect girls, protect the marginalized transgender girls.”

The passing of the bill comes a couple weeks after Arkansas governor Sarah Sanders signed an executive order in response to President Biden’s new Title IX regulations that added protections for transgender athletes. Sanders said she had been “appalled” by the “attack on common sense.”

At least 20 states have approved a version of a blanket ban on transgender athletes playing on K-12 and collegiate sports teams statewide, but a Biden administration rule to forbid such outright bans is set to take effect this year after multiple delays and much pushback.

In New Hampshire, the Senate previously passed a bill that would have banned transgender girls from participating on sports teams at both the high school and college levels, but the House defeated it earlier this month.

RCB vs CSK, IPL 2024: What is DLS method – how is it calculated during rain-affected matches?

0

The IPL 2024 match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday will decide the final playoff spot. But the weather is likely to play spoilsport.

In case of a rain-induced disruption, the game’s fate will be majorly influenced by the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern or DLS method.

LIVE SCORE – RCB vs CSK

What is the DLS?

DLS is a mathematical system employed to calculate target scores and reach outcomes in rain-shortened limited-overs matches. Devised by English statisticians Frank Duckworth and Tony Lewis and originally named after them, it was first used in 1997. Australian academic Steve Stern updated the formula, becoming its custodian ahead of the 2015 World Cup; his name was added to the title.

Why is it needed?

Having a reserve day in place for a limited-overs match and resuming proceedings the following morning would seem ideal, but logistical and scheduling challenges mean this is not always feasible. And so the game’s administrators have for long laboured to find the fairest way of settling rain-affected one-dayers. When a match is interrupted by inclement weather, and one or both teams do not get their full quota of overs, an outcome has to be reached in the time available after resumption of play. What any calculation is doing is trying to adjust a target score according to the reduction in overs. Any number is an estimate: there is no one right answer. What the ICC has tried to do is arrive at a formula that takes into account as many parameters as possible and properly reflects the efforts of both teams. The DLS method, which has been updated a few times, is generally considered the most accurate system used in international cricket.

How does the DLS method work?

Neither the ARR nor the MPO methods were able to factor the match situation into their calculations, failing to take into account the wickets a team had left. The DLS method addresses this issue, considering both wickets and overs as resources and revising the target based on the availability of those resources. At the start of an innings, a team has 100% of its resources — 50 overs and 10 wickets — available. The DLS method expresses the balls and wickets remaining at any point as a percentage. How much is a wicket or a ball worth in percentage terms? This is calculated according to a formula which takes into account the scoring pattern in international matches, derived from analysis of data (ODI and T20, men and women) from a sliding four-year window. On the first of July every year, a new year’s worth of data is added; so the DLS evolves as scoring trends do.

ALSO READ | List of IPL matches affected by rain in Bengaluru

The rate at which resources deplete is not constant over the course of an innings: the curve is exponential, with that resource percentage falling faster as more wickets are lost and more balls are consumed.

The DLS methods sets targets (and decides outcomes) by calculating how many runs teams should score (and would have scored) if the resources available to both sides were equal. To calculate a target, the formula may simply be expressed thus: Team 2’s par score = Team 1’s score x (Team 2’s resources/Team 1’s resources). In international cricket, the resource values (which are not publicly available) are obtained from a computer programme.

The DLS method also allows for the fact that a team batting before a rain interruption would have batted differently had it known the game was going to be truncated. Of course, the weighting of wickets and overs is based on a formula, and there can be no universally perfect weightage, simply because the method cannot make qualitative measurements of individual batting abilities. It was long felt that under the D-L method, teams chasing big totals were better off keeping wickets in hand when rain was around the corner even if it meant scoring at a lower rate. Steve Stern felt he had improved on the D-L method in this regard by adjusting the formula to reflect changing realities in high-scoring ODIs and T20 matches.

An older version of the DL method (called the D-L Standard Edition), meant to be used where computers are not available, applies pre-calculated resource values off a chart. Where upward revisions are required (when the first innings is interrupted), a quantity called the G50 — the average total score in a 50-over innings — is used as reference. For matches involving ICC full member nations, G50 is currently fixed at 245. However, the Standard Edition is not used in international cricket.
