NBA Playoffs 2024: Pacers cruise past Knicks, send series to Game 7

0

Pascal Siakam recorded 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists and the Indiana Pacers forced a Game 7 with a stellar 116-103 victory over the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference second-round series on Friday in Indianapolis.

Myles Turner added 17 points and eight rebounds for the sixth-seeded Pacers. Tyrese Haliburton had 15 points and nine assists, Andrew Nembhard added 15 points, six rebounds and six assists and T.J. McConnell also put up 15 for Indiana.

“That’s the makeup of our team,” Siakam said. “We just share the basketball. Anybody is dangerous out there on the floor. We need our bench. T.J. and all those guys coming in, they bring us so much energy and we’re going to need that in Game 7 for sure.”

Jalen Brunson scored 26 of his 31 points in the second half for the second-seeded Knicks. Miles McBride scored 20 points, Donte DiVincenzo added 17 and Precious Achiuwa had 12 points and eight rebounds.

Game 7 is Sunday afternoon in New York. The home team has won all six games of the series.

“Now it’s a one-game series,” Haliburton said. “It’s for all the marbles. Where else better to have a Game 7 than (Madison Square Garden)? No team has won a game on the road in this series. We’ve got to be ready to go.”

The Pacers led by as many as 23 points in Game 6 after the series featured consecutive blowouts. Indiana won 121-89 in Game 4 before New York rolled to a 121-91 victory in Game 5.

“We played harder tonight, which was a must,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. “We moved the ball better and we got more rebounds and that’s obviously a big key in this series.”

New York’s Josh Hart had five points and eight rebounds in 31 minutes on Friday while laboring through a left abdominal injury. He exited with 9:53 left in the game, and the Knicks ruled him out for the remainder of the game a short time later.

“This is the nature of the playoffs,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said of the team’s latest injury. “This is what you play for. You love competition. This is it. … You’re going to get tested — physically, mentally, emotionally. You have to be able to get through that. So whatever it is that we’re facing, we can overcome. Just keep battling.”

Obi Toppin added 11 points for Indiana, which shot 53.8 percent from the field, including 9 of 26 (34.6 percent) from 3-point range. The Pacers held a 47-35 rebounding edge.

The Knicks made 43.9 percent of their field-goal attempts and were 13 of 34 (38.2 percent) from behind the arc.

The Pacers used a 10-2 run early in the second half to begin to pull away. Turner capped it with a dunk to give the hosts a 71-58 advantage with 8:56 left in the period.

Indiana tacked on a 9-1 run later in the quarter with McConnell’s three-point play making it 84-66 with 2:39 left.

Brunson’s 3-pointer with 14.3 seconds to go gave him 14 points in the stanza and also pulled New York within 88-75 entering the fourth quarter.

“They have been doing a great job all series of making adjustments,” Brunson said. “I have to make some adjustments too. It was a mixture of me missing shots and not playing very well.”

The Pacers opened the final period with a 14-4 run. Nembhard’s 3-pointer pushed the lead to 99-79 with 8:24 remaining, and Ben Sheppard hit a trey 32 seconds later to increase the margin to 23. Indiana cruised the rest of the way.

“Listen, in a series like this, you can’t sit around patting yourself on the back,” Carlisle said. “That’s what gets your (expletive) kicked in the next game. We’re going to keep our celebrations very short, if at all, and get ready for Sunday afternoon.”

Siakam scored 15 first-half points as the Pacers led 61-51 at the break. DiVincenzo and McBride scored 15 apiece in the half for New York.

Brunson missed his final 11 first-half shots and had five points on 2-of-13 shooting in the half.

“They try to make things difficult so I have to adjust as well,” Brunson said. “They showed me different looks and I have to do a better job of reading them. I can’t be what I was for the first 40 minutes of the game.”

Italian Open: Jarry stuns Paul to set up Italian Open final against Zverev

0

Chilean 21st seed Nicolas Jarry outclassed American Tommy Paul 6-3 6-7(3) 6-3 to reach the Italian Open on Friday as former champion Alexander Zverev recovered from a slow start to beat Chilean Alejandro Tabilo 1-6 7-6(4) 6-2.

Jarry produced relentless power from the baseline, hitting 13 aces and 35 winners to reach his first ATP Masters 1000 final in two hours and 44 minutes.

Jarry took a 5-3 lead in the opener, relying on his service before closing out the set with a brilliant ace.

Paul, the 14th seed, refused to go quietly in the second, pegging back the Chilean’s 4-2 lead to force a tiebreak, which the American won to take the match to a decider.

Jarry started the third strongly and opened a 5-2 lead, winning 13 points at the net before securing victory when a Paul backhand went wide.

Earlier on Friday, Zverev, who won the title in 2017 and reached the final the following year, looked in real danger when 29th seed Tabilo raced away with the opening set.

The 26-year-old, who beat world number one Novak Djokovic in the third round, was playing in his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final, but did not look fazed as he broke Zverev twice in the first set.

Tabilo won five games in a row in taking the opener, but the second was much closer. The Chilean did force the only break point of the set, but Zverev held and went on to win the tiebreak.

German Zverev raised his game in the deciding set, breaking twice, and was never threatened again en route to his first final of the year.

Ranking The Contenders: Five-star WR Dakorien Moore

0

Thursday night brought the recruiting industry possibly the biggest news so far in the 2025 cycle as five-star wide receiver Dakorien Moore backed off his pledge from LSU.

The Duncanville, Texas, standout was committed to the Tigers since July of 2023. His decision means the No. 4 overall prospect in the country is back on the market.

There are three programs remaining in the running to land Moore: Texas, Oregon, and Ohio State.

Rivals ranks the contenders as the summer visit period approaches.

1. Texas

Texas is the easy choice for No. 1 as it stands right now. Moore has visited the Longhorns on numerous occasions, an easy trip for he and his family, just short of a three hour drive. The Texas offense under Steve Sarkisian fits Moore perfectly with his speed and natural playmaking ability. Texas is also able to sell the production and development of the wide receiver position as well as a trusted future in the quarterback room with former No. 1 overall prospect Arch Manning. Outside of football, the Longhorns also present very NIL upside, which Moore will certainly be able to take advantage of. Moore will take an official visit to Austin, Texas, in June.

*****

2. Oregon

As it stands today, I see the Oregon Ducks as the No. 2 option. Oregon presents very similar upsides as Texas with wide receiver production and development, a deep quarterback future, and proven NIL strength. The Ducks will be able to roll out the red carpet for Moore in June, for what is expected to be his final official visit. On that visit, Moore will certainly hear the top pitch of what the Ducks have to offer in every aspect. Not only with Dan Lanning and Junior Adams, Oregon has one of the nation’s top recruiters in Ra’Shaad Samples, who is the son of Duncanville head coach Reginald Samples.

*****

3. Ohio State

Ohio State falls in at three, but certainly not a distant three. When it comes to wide receivers, the Buckeyes are the cream of the crop in both recruiting and developing. There is a deep quarterback room for the stable of elite wide receivers Ohio State will roll out in the coming years. Ohio State has hosted Moore before and he will be back in Columbus later this month for an official visit. Offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Brian Hartline is a master of recruiting the position and a visit spending several days with Hartline and Ryan Day could very easily help them move up the list of contenders.

Lyon wins French title ahead of Women’s Champions League final

0

Lyon warmed up for the upcoming UEFA Women’s Champions League final by winning its 17th French title on Friday thanks to a 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the deciding game of the season.

Delphine Cascarino put Lyon ahead at a sparsely-populated Groupama Stadium in the championship final, and Kadidiatou Diani doubled its lead by the midway point in the first half.

Diani netted against her old club following a disastrous mistake by PSG goalkeeper Katarzyna Kiedrzynek.

Malawi forward Tabitha Chawinga, who has had an outstanding season, pulled a goal back for PSG in the second half but Lyon held on.

Its 17 domestic titles have all come in the last 18 seasons — PSG has denied them once in that time, in 2021.

Sonia Bompastor’s Lyon, for whom former Ballon d’Or winner Ada Hegerberg was an unused substitute, can now look forward to next Saturday’s Champions League final against Barcelona in Bilbao.

Lyon is the record eight-time European champions and has won the Champions League six times in the last eight campaigns.

However, Barcelona has won two of the last three and are the reigning champions.

Lyon finished well clear of PSG at the top of the 12-team French league at the end of the regular season.

However, this season saw the title decided by play-offs between the top four in the division, with Lyon hammering fourth-placed Reims 6-0 in the semifinals last weekend.

PSG, meanwhile, had needed penalties to see off city rivals Paris FC, and overcoming the favourites proved a step too far for the side who did recently win the French Cup.

Lyon also beat PSG in the semifinals of this season’s Champions League.

The Patriots enter the NFL draft needing a QB, but could trade down to fill other needs

0

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The 2024 NFL draft represents the next chapter in the remaking of the New England Patriots.

Bill Belichick is gone after driving both the franchise’s on-field and personnel decisions for most of his more than two-decade run in New England.

It’s created a domino effect inside team headquarters, with team owner Robert Kraft seizing on the opportunity to take a more active role in steering the direction that his six-time Super Bowl championship franchise will move into its next era.

It started with the hiring of new coach Jerod Mayo, a former player and assistant under Belichick, but someone poised to bring a looser vibe to the locker room.

As for who will have the keys to the reshaping of Mayo’s first roster, Kraft has put that in the hands of Eliot Wolf, who has a lot more power than his nebulous director of scouting title suggests.

He will be the lead voice inside the Patriots’ draft room and have a large say in what the Patriots ultimately do with the No. 3 overall selection and the remainder of their eight total picks.

The biggest hole is clearly at quarterback after the Patriots traded 2021 first-round pick Mac Jones to Jacksonville.

Wolf wouldn’t divulge their internal ranking of the top quarterback prospects, but said “there’s a general consensus how we feel about these players.”

The focus is getting quality players who can help turn the page on back-to-back losing seasons.

“We’re going to try to get this thing right and get it back going,” Wolf said.

Mayo said he has trust in the structure that’s been created around him and in the personnel department’s ability to find Jones’ replacement and fill needs at receiver and on the offensive line.

“I’m confident we could absolutely fill those roles,” Mayo said at last month’s NFL owners’ meetings. “In saying that, though, it’s going to take time. Our philosophy as far as putting this roster together — you want to draft and develop. When it’s all said and done, you want to draft and develop. And I have 100% confidence in Eliot and his staff, weaponizing the offense and really getting us better as an overall team.”

NEEDS

The Patriots did make a move during free agency at quarterback after jettisoning Jones, bringing back veteran Jacoby Brissett — who was originally drafted by New England in 2016 — to a one-year deal. But he clearly is more of a placeholder than a long-term solution.

The Patriots still need a franchise QB.

The Chicago Bears are expected to take 2022 Heisman Trophy winner and former USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick. Washington is also in the market for a quarterback, leaving New England with a tough decision at No. 3.

LSU’s Jayden Daniels, North Carolina’s Drake Maye are considered to be the top prospects behind Williams, though Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy has also gotten late buzz. All three have visited with the Patriots, but a lead candidate is unclear.

That said, New England will be in the market for a top receiver and need help at offensive tackle to help protect whichever QB is under center.

DON’T NEED

One position the Patriots are in decent shape at is at safety. Kyle Dugger’s production dipped slightly from the breakout season he had in 2022, but he was still a stalwart for New England’s defense. There’s also decent depth behind him in Jabrill Peppers and Marte Mapu.

TRADE POSSIBILITY

As much as the Patriots don’t want to miss an opportunity to select a potential quarterback of the future at No. 3, Mayo and Wolf didn’t rule out the possibility of trading down, if a favorable amount of compensation were offered.

“We sit at a very enviable spot at No. 3 where we could take someone at No. 3 or if someone offers a bag as we would say — or a lot of first-round picks — we’d definitely have to talk about those things as we continue to put together this team,” Mayo said.

Said Wolf: “We’re open to anything — moving up, moving down. We’re open for business in the first round and in every round.”

Bronny James says the winner of a 1-on-1 game with his father LeBron James remains ‘to be determined’

0

Bronny James has been one of the most talked about prospects at this year’s NBA Scouting Combine.

James met with the media at the combine and fielded a round of rapid-fire questions. One of the questions brought up a hypothetical one-on-one game with an NBA player.

“If you could challenge any NBA player to a one-on-one, who would it be and why?” the reporter asked.

“LeBron James, because I have not played him one-on-one in a minute,” Bronny replied.

The reporter followed up by asking Bronny, “Who would win it?”

“That I don’t know. … To be determined,” the younger James responded.

BRONNY JAMES: ‘I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT PLAYING WITH MY DAD’

The 19-year-old, whose full name is LeBron Raymone James Jr., also does not seem interested in passing his name to a potential future child.

“If you have a son, will you name them LeBron James III?”

“Absolutely not,” Bronny responded.

VIEW MOMENT ON X

James went into cardiac arrest during preseason workouts at the USC basketball team’s home arena last summer. James played 25 games his freshman season and averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.

Bronny was also asked to share his thoughts on the outcome of a potential game between him and his younger brother Bryce. Bronny was confident he would easily defeat Bryce.

“I’m winning, 11-5,” Bronny said.

LeBron James had previously shared his hope to play in the NBA alongside his son, but after the Los Angeles Lakers’ first-round playoff exit, he said he had not “given much thought lately” to that wish.

“My dream has always just been to put my name out, make a name for myself and, of course, get to the NBA,” Bronny James said Tuesday. “I never thought about playing with my dad. But, of course, he’s brought it up a couple times.

“This is a serious business. I don’t feel like there would be a thought of, ‘I’m just drafting this kid just because I’m gonna get his dad.’ I don’t think a GM would really allow that. I think I’ve put in the work, and I’ll get drafted because of not only the player but the person that I am.”

Bronny measured at a height of 6 feet, 1½ inches at the NBA Scouting Combine. He was listed at 6 feet, 4 inches at USC.

Tiger Woods finished his first round at Valhalla 1-over par, putting him in a decent spot to see the weekend at the PGA Championship.

But two blowup holes early in his second round wiped out any hopes he had of playing Saturday and Sunday.

Woods, at 7-over par, will miss the cut at the PGA Championship.

He has not finished four rounds at the tournament since 2020 and has done so just twice overall since 2013.

Tiger Woods errant shot

The projected cut line when Woods finished his second round was 1-under.

Since Woods finished second in the 2018 event, the tournament has not been kind to him. He missed the cut in 2019 despite winning the Masters two months earlier. Then, he finished tied for 37th in 2020, didn’t play in 2021, then withdrew after three rounds in 2022. He also missed the tournament last year.

Woods parred his first hole, but things went south on the par-4 second. A pitch shot went into the front-side bunker. Then, he airmailed the green into the backside trap. After finally getting on in five, he two-putted his way to a triple bogey.

He three-putted on the par-3 third for a bogey, then recorded another triple at the fourth, a par-4, after getting stuck in more sand.

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER DAZZLES IN SECOND ROUND OF PGA CHAMPIONSHIP HOURS AFTER ARREST

Woods showed bright spots when he birdied seven and eight, the latter of which he was mere inches from a hole-in-one. But that was the only success he had on the day. He bogeyed 11 and 12 to get to 7-over on the day but salvaged the day with a birdie on the par-5 18th.

He finished the day with a 6-over 77, nearly 24 years after his PGA title at the Louisville course.

It will be just his 13th missed cut at a major, but nine of them have come since 2015. He’s also withdrawn from two.

This comes after Woods finished in last at The Masters. He carded an 82 in the third round, his lowest score ever at Augusta.

The tournament is now headlined by Scottie Scheffler’s arrest early Friday morning as he traveled to Valhalla.

Scheffler was detained at 6:01 a.m. and released just over 2½ hours later, arriving at Valhalla another half-hour after that, 56 minutes before his tee time.

Scheffler was booked into the Louisville Department of Corrections later Friday. He was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer (a felony), criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic.

And then he shot a 5-under 66 to head into the clubhouse two shots back of the lead.

Saudi Pro League 2023-24: Al Nassr settles for 1-1 draw with Al Hilal after Ronaldo misfires

0

Al Hilal kept its unbeaten streak in the Saudi Pro League 2023-24 alive after Aleksandar Mitrovic converted a penalty to make it 1-1 in the dying moments of its match against Al Nassr at the Al-Awwal Stadium on Friday.

Al Nassr took the lead in the first minute after Cristiano Ronaldo set up Otavio at the edge of the penalty area. Otavio smashed the ball into the top right corner past a helpless Yassine Bounou to give his side the lead 25 seconds into the match.

That was the brightest moment of the match for Ronaldo who was looking to equal Moroccan Abderrazak Hamdallah’s record for the most goals scored by a player in a single season (34) in the SPL.

The 39-year-old Portuguese talisman missed three easy chances to extend Al Nassr’s lead in the first half, which ended up haunting his side in the end.

Al Hilal found its usual form in the second half but could not convert the chances. Goalkeeper Bounou kept his side in the tie, making a couple of fantastic saves in the closing stages of the match.

AS IT HAPPENED | Al Nassr vs Al Hilal Highlights, Saudi Pro League 2023-24

With the clock running out, Al Hilal finally got its opportunity to equalise when it was awarded a penalty after Sadio Mane caught Saud Abdulhamid in the face on the right side of the penalty box, five minutes into injury time.

After a long VAR check, the referee pointed to the spot and Mitrovic made no mistake in dispatching the ball into the goal, extending his side’s unbeaten run in the league to 32 games.

The two sides will meet again in the King Cup of Champions final at the end of the month, where Ronaldo and Co. will look to stop their city rival from attaining the domestic treble after it secured the SPL and Saudi Super Cup.
