Osaka out of Wimbledon warm-up after losing thriller

0

Former world number one Naomi Osaka was dumped out of the ‘s-Hertogenbosch grass-court tournament in a deciding tie-break thriller on Friday, ending an encouraging run on the surface ahead of Wimbledon.

A battling performance by Canadian Bianca Andreescu, ranked a lowly 228 in the world, took her into the semifinals with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) victory over the four-time Grand Slam champion.

Andreescu will next face Dalma Galfi from Hungary for a place in Sunday’s final, with the draw opening up after the defeat of top seed Jessica Pegula.

“For me today it was just about trying my best to stay in the present moment. She has a great serve, my focus was just to get the ball back into the court on return,” Andreescu said after the match.

“Staying mentally tough was key today.”

Two lengthy rain breaks meant both players struggled for consistency early in the match, which went on serve until the seventh game when Andreescu seized the initiative.

A powerful return down the line and an Osaka error handed the Canadian a break, which she backed up with a love service game marked by a string of mistakes from the Japanese player.

Andreescu managed to serve out the first set 6-4 in 40 minutes, cleverly breaking up Osaka’s rhythm with heavily sliced drop shots.

But the Japanese hit back instantly in the second set, breaking Andreescu’s first service game with a sweet crosscourt forehand drive on break point and racing to a 3-0 lead.

An Andreescu double fault gifted her opponent the double break and Osaka closed out the second set 6-3 with a service winner.

The only previous match between the pair was a nail-biting three-setter in Beijing in 2019 and the third set was also closely fought.

A fired-up Andreescu broke Osaka’s serve in the sixth game, wowing the crowd with some outstanding retrieving and inventive spins.

She served for the match, but Osaka battled back with a break of her own, taking the contest into a final set tie-break.

Both women had their chances in the shoot-out, but Andreescu held her nerve better, Osaka making several unforced errors including on match point, as she dumped a backhand into the net.

Osaka has never played her best tennis on grass, her four Grand Slam victories have come on the hard courts at the US and Australian Open.

But she has showed she could be a force at Wimbledon this year as she continues her return after giving birth to her daughter.

Osaka had a match point against eventual French Open winner Iga Swiatek in the second round, the sternest test the world number one faced on the Paris clay.

Euro 2024: Defending champion Italy looks for positive start, Albania out to cause upset

0

Defending champion Italy needs to kick off its Euro 2024 campaign against Albania on Saturday in the same fashion as the last tournament, but its opponents will see this game as the perfect opportunity to make headlines.

In 2021, Italy began the Euros with a game against Turkey, a side which many had tipped as possible tournament dark horses, but Italy romped to an emphatic 3-0 victory, and went on to top its group winning all three games.

With Spain and Croatia still to come in Group B, Italy won’t expect to have it so easy this time around, and this is the one game where it will be expected to take all three points.

Albania may be seen as the group’s whipping boys, but with nothing to lose, it will be out to cause an upset wherever possible, and what better chance than catching Italy cold in the opening game.

Italy, like three years ago, come into the Euros without the weight of the favourite tag hanging over it, and while a win over Albania wouldn’t necessarily change people’s minds, it would give it the confidence needed for the challenges ahead.

Luciano Spalletti’s side is coming up against a team filled with many familiar faces, as 10 of Albania’s squad play their club football in Italy, and they have a manager who also has a past in the country.

Sylvinho was one of Roberto Mancini’s assistants when he managed Inter Milan, and the Brazilian, like many in the Albanian team, and the country in general, also speaks Italian, so there won’t be many secrets on or off the pitch.

Italy is still sweating on the fitness of key midfielder Nicolo Barella, and the Inter Milan man may be rested by Spalletti rather than risk his absence in the later games, while Davide Frattesi returned to regular training.

With Italy again struggling to find a goal scorer, Gianluca Scamacca looks set to be the player charged with finding the net, and against Albania he will come up against his Atalanta colleague Berat Djimsiti.

The pair helped Atalanta win its first-ever European trophy just a few weeks ago in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, but this time they find themselves as rivals in Europe.

Scamacca has scored only once in an Italy shirt in 16 appearances, and if Italy are to get off to a winning start they will need to break down a stubborn Albania defence which conceded just four goals in qualifying.

Mavericks stay alive in NBA Finals with Game 4 blowout win over Celtics

0

The Dallas Mavericks are the 157th NBA to be down 3-0 in a series — each of the previous 156 were unable to complete the comeback. But it all starts with one.

The Mavs salvaged a sweep in front of their home crowd in Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Friday, taking down the Boston Celtics, 122-84 — it was a third-largest margin of victory in Finals history.

Dallas got off to a hot start, outscoring the Celtics, 31-24 in the first quarter, but as the Mavs kept up their scoring, the Celtics did not.

Boston was outscored in the second quarter, 27-14 — their 35 first-half points were their lowest in the entire season.

The Mavericks shot 52.3% from the floor in the first half, while Boston made just 29.7%. Jayson Tatum had 15 points in the first 24 minutes, and still-likely Finals MVP Jaylen Brown had eight, but Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, Sam Hauser, and Xavier Tillman each had three points, so there wasn’t much help from the supporting cast.

As for Dallas, it was the Luka Dončić show, as he put up 25 points in the first half, almost singlehandedly outscoring the Celtics himself in the first half — Kyrie Irving added 11.

The Mavs kept their foot on the pedal, getting out to a 29-17 run to start the third quarter to go up 38, their largest lead of the night to that point (they wound up leading by 48), and it was smooth sailing from there, as both squads went with their B-teams the rest of the way.

Tatum did not score in the second half, while Brown added just two more points. Irving finished with 21 points.

The noise was loud for Dončić, who was heavily criticized after fouling out in Game 3 for poor body language and snapping at his coaches for poor plays he had made. He only scored four points in the second half, but he hardly needed to do much after Dallas’ dominant second half.

“We can’t lose no more — we’re gonna believe to the end,” he said after the game.

NBA Finals 2023-24: Luka Doncic, Mavs avert sweep with Game 4 blowout

0

Luka Doncic scored 25 of his 29 points in the first half, Kyrie Irving added 21 points and the Dallas Mavericks avoided a sweep with a 122-84 rout of the Boston Celtics in Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Friday.

The series shifts back to Boston for Game 5 on Monday as the Celtics will look to close it out at home. However, Dallas showed life in extending the series after Boston was the dominant team while winning the first three games of the best-of-seven series.

The script flipped in Game 4. Doncic and the Mavericks got off to a fast start and didn’t look back. Doncic started a 10-0 spurt in the first quarter with a floater and closed it with a driving layup as Dallas took a 25-14 lead with 3:19 left in the period. That early run was a sign of things to come.

Dallas had a 34-21 lead by the end of the first quarter, scoring the final six points on 3-pointers by Irving and P.J. Washington.

The Mavericks kept pouring it on. They doubled up the Celtics 50-25 on a layup by Irving at the 5:16 mark of the second quarter. To close the half, Maxi Kleber drilled a corner 3-pointer off an assist by Doncic. That gave Dallas a 61-35 lead at the break.

The Mavericks shot 52.3 percent from the field compared to the Celtics’ 29.7 percent in the opening half. Dallas also won the rebounding battle 29-13 over the opening 24 minutes.

Dallas turned it into a full-on rout in the second half, leading by as many as 48, taking a 115-67 lead on a 3-pointer by Jaden Hardy with 5:58 left in the game.

The Mavericks reached the 100-point mark several minutes before that on a 3-pointer by Tim Hardaway Jr. Dallas didn’t reach the 100-point mark in any of the first three games against Boston.

Hardaway finished with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range.

For Boston, it was a letdown for a team that remains in control of the Finals. NBA teams are 156-0 when taking a 3-0 lead in a best-of-seven series.

The Celtics were led by Jayson Tatum’s 15 points. Sam Hauser added 14 points, and Payton Pritchard had 11.

U.S. swimming Olympic trials in Indy expected to shatter attendance records

0

Swimming records of all kinds are expected to fall when the U.S. Olympic Trials start in Indianapolis on Saturday at an NFL stadium that has been transformed into the largest natatorium ever to host a swim meet.

Lucas Oil Stadium is normally home to the Indianapolis Colts but for nine consecutive nights the eyes of the swimming world will be on newly installed pools and the more than 1,000 athletes vying for tickets to the Paris Games.

“This is the biggest thing we’ve ever done at USA Swimming,” said chief commercial officer Shana Ferguson.

“This is also the largest selection event in any sport in any country across the history of the Olympic Games.

“What we are trying to do at Lucas Oil Stadium is epic for our sport and epic for sports in general.”

READ | WADA hits back after new report on Chinese swimmers

In its new configuration the downtown stadium has a capacity of around 30,000 and organisers hope on opening night to break the previous record of 16,000 fans who attended a swimming event at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

The stakes could not be higher for the athletes at the trials who in most cases need to touch the wall either first or second to be one of the 26 men and 26 women who will make the team for Paris.

“This meet is it for these athletes,” Ferguson said.

“If you don’t have a great meet, even if you’re the best in the world, you are not named to the U.S. team.

“American athletes will tell you they are more nervous for the Olympic Trials than they are for the Olympic Games.”

World records could also fall in the “fast” competition pool, she said.

“Our number one goal here is to produce the most technically flawless meet ever and that starts with these pools being perfect and these pools being fast.

“Fast water is cool water and we have engineered the temperature of the water to the nearest half degree that we wanted. Every day we’re also measuring to ensure there’s no current.”

In Paris, Team USA will look to once again leave other countries in their wake like they did at the 2020 Tokyo Games, where the U.S. racked up 30 medals including 11 golds.

In the pool in Indy, fans will see a mix of proven veterans including seven-times gold medallists Katie Ledecky and Caeleb Dressel plus rising stars Gretchen Walsh and Dare Rose hoping to make the squad and extend Team USA’s supremacy in the pool.

Texas A&M Reels In Top-100 TE Kiotti Armstrong

0

Since the day Mike Elko stepped back on campus at Texas A&M as the head coach of the Aggies, the recruiting presence has been strong.

That was amplified on Friday night as elite four-star tight end Kiotti Armstrong committed to Texas A&M. He chose the Aggies over the Texas Longhorns.

The 6-foot-5, 246-pounder out of Jasper, Texas, is now the highest ranked commit in the Aggies 2025 class.

Texas A&M has long been considered among the shortlist of favorites. Even after the changing of the staff and the reset of the program, they were able to stay in front for Armstrong.

“Coach (Mike) Elko, coach (Trooper) Taylor, I like them a lot. Communication is great, they feel like a family and I like the scheme. And it’s right down the road from me,” Armstrong told Rivals this spring.

Darius Armstrong, Kiotti’s father commented on the commitment and the feeling the family got while on visits.

“We went back and with this new staff, it was a completely different feeling. And we’re Aggies now. Gig ‘Em.”

As a junior, Armstrong, appeared in 11 games, and while he was not reeling in an abundance of catches, the clip he was scoring touchdowns at was astounding. He finished the season with 26 receptions for 268 yards and a nine touchdowns. That means he scored a touchdown roughly every 2.5 catches.

Tennis great Serena Williams offers Caitlin Clark advice, support: ‘They can’t do what you do’

0

Tennis great Serena Williams is one of the most accomplished athletes of the 21st century. She won 23 grand slam singles titles during her prolific career, which is just one shy of the women’s tennis all-time record.

She retired after the 2022 US Open, citing her desire to spend more time with family and focus on other ventures. Her docuseries “In the Arena: Serena Williams,” premiered at this year’s Tribeca Festival in New York City.

At one point during the festival, the tennis champion was asked if she had any thoughts she was willing to share about a fellow female athlete — Caitlin Clark.

Williams advised the WNBA rookie to keep “doing what she’s doing.”

“I just love that she tried to stay grounded and that she doesn’t… look at her social [media],” Williams told The Associated Press on the red carpet. “I get it. I don’t either. And I think it’s so important to continue doing what she’s doing.”

Williams also suggested that some of the negativity directed at Clark stemmed from jealousy.

“And no matter what other people do, if people are negative then it’s because they can’t do what you do… basically,” Williams noted. “And hopefully she’ll continue to do what she’s doing.”

Clark’s name has been featured in countless sports headlines throughout the first several weeks of her first season in the WNBA.

Much of the conversation about Clark has centered around the level of physicality the rookie has faced during her first handful of professional basketball games.

“I think everybody is physical with me. They get away with things that probably other people don’t get away with,” Clark said on May 28 after the Fever dropped a game to the Los Angeles Sparks.

Diana Taurasi, Kahleah Copper, A’Ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray, Breanna Stewart, Brittney Griner, Alyssa Thomas, Napheesa Collier, Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young and Sabrina Ionescu made up the 12-woman roster.

Euro 2024: No Laporte for Spain, says coach de la Fuente ahead of Croatia clash

0

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente was tight-lipped about who would start his side’s Euro 2024 opener against Croatia on Saturday, but defender Aymeric Laporte will play no part having been ruled out due to unspecified “issues”.

Speaking to a press conference on Friday, De la Fuente said Laporte was fit enough to play against the Croats although he was not going to consider him for selection.

“Aymeric Laporte didn’t get injured, he just had some issues and I decided we wouldn’t take the risk so he’s not going to play tomorrow,” the 62-year-old told reporters.

READ | Spain vs Croatia all-time head-to-head record ahead of Euro 2024 Group B match

Champions in 2008 and 2012, Spain reached the last 16 in 2016 and was beaten on penalties by Italy in the semifinals of the last Euros. Spain expects a tough test as it gets the tournament underway against the Croatians.

“We’re playing against another strong team tomorrow, it won’t be easy. It’s a very even tournament with some of the best players in the world, we have to perform to a really high level and get things right,” De la Fuente said.

Though declining to reveal who would start, the coach was full of admiration for his two flying wingers, Lamine Yamal, 16, and 21-year-old Nico Williams, with Yamal coming in for particular praise.

“He’s a young boy with an incredible talent, it’s almost a gift from God. Very few players have his attributes in terms of understanding the game,” he added.

Midfielder Rodri emphasised the importance of getting off to a good start in Group B, where they will also face European champions Italy and Albania.

“It’s a short tournament, the group is tough and we know how important a good first result is in this type of tournament,” he told reporters.

“You are still nervous at the beginning. You want to see how the team will respond if you play at a high level and compete,” he added.
