Patriots owner Robert Kraft says America is in ‘need’ of specific Tom Brady trait

0

Everybody knows Tom Brady is the greatest of all time, but Robert Kraft says it was much more than Brady’s skill on the field that won him that title.

Kraft inducted Brady into the New England Patriots Hall of Fame this week, officially retiring his No. 12.

Brady delivered a speech about hard work.

Brady was the 199th overall pick of the 2000 NFL Draft, an afterthought compared to other quarterbacks from that class, many of whom are forgotten by now.

But Brady had a chip on his shoulder from day one.

“I remember him coming to us 25 years ago, and he came down the stairs during training camp. He had a pizza box, and he came over to me and said, ‘Hello Mr. Kraft, I want to introduce myself,’” Kraft recalled Friday on “Jesse Watters Primetime.” “I said, ‘I know who you are. You’re Tom Brady.’

“And he looked me in the eye and said, ‘I’m the best decision this organization has ever made.’ I’ve never met anyone like him in my life.”

SAINTS’ ALVIN KAMARA LEAVES MINICAMP EARLY DUE TO LACK OF CONTRACT PROGRESS, AGENT SAYS

Brady is unique in that no one was willing to sacrifice more for the team than him.

“Players want to earn money and earn as much as they can. We have a salary cap, so when he really had won three Super Bowls in his first four years with us, I said, ‘We’ll give you [a new contract], but I wish you’d take 30% less, because … it’s gonna go around to other players to make you better.’ He’s the only player in my history who would take less money to make the team better.”

There was one more quality about Brady that made him a winner, and Kraft says it could be a lesson for all.

“Tommy articulated it beautifully. If you want to win, it’s really a team sport. It’s not individual, and you better get along with all kinds of people of all backgrounds,” Kraft said.

“We need more of that in America today.”

The duo won six Super Bowls in New England before Brady won one more with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Euro 2024: Hungary vs Switzerland all time head-to-head record

0

Hungary and Switzerland open their Euro 2024 campaigns on Saturday with points to prove after starkly contrasting form, as they look to lay down some early markers for who will advance from the group stage.

Hungary has been oozing panache after an astonishing unbeaten run that lasted 20 months until last week and is a side the fragile Swiss would have preferred to avoid for an opener in which they desperately need a confidence boost.

Switzerland finished second in the easiest of the groups after a dismal, at times clumsy qualifying campaign, beating only Andorra in its last eight games and squandering leads late on in four of those matches, against Romania, Kosovo, twice, and Israel.

Hungary and Switzerland are joined by Scotland and hosts Germany in a Group A that the form guide indicates is wide open.

Mavericks great Dirk Nowitzki nearly knocked to the ground during fan’s failed dunk attempt

0

NBA champion Dirk Nowitzki learned the hard way that giving a fan an opportunity to dunk over you can be a risky proposition.

The seven-footer appeared at a promotional event outside the Dallas Mavericks’ home arena before Game 3 of the NBA Finals, and a fan at the event was eager to show off his dunking prowess.

Nowitzki stood under the basket and held the ball behind his head as the fan got a running start.

The fan did not even manage to get the ball from Nowitzki’s hands. He instead landed on the former NBA star’s back, almost knocking him down in the process.

The collar on Nowitzki’s blue shirt popped up as a result of the failed dunk. Aside from that, the Mavs legend appeared OK.

Francesco Molinari miraculously makes cut at US Open after ace on final hole of second round

0

Majors have not been kind to Francesco Molinari since he won the 2018 Open Championship, but he got the break of a lifetime Friday.

Entering this weekend’s U.S. Open, Molinari had missed the cut in eight of his last 11 majors, including each of the last five.

Molinari was in danger of missing yet another. In fact, it appeared inevitable.

But he produced a miracle.

Molinari was teeing off for the final time in his second round Friday on the par-3 ninth. It was his 18th hole of the day, after he started on the back nine. He was two shots back of the projected cut line and was 5-over.

That meant anything but an ace would have likely resulted in a missed cut.

Despite those improbable odds, he got a perfect roll from his iron shot, and it landed in the cup for the necessary hole-in-one.

The ace took him from 7-over to 5-over, putting him at the line (top-60 and ties).

It was the second hole-in-one of the day at the course after Sepp Straka aced the ninth hole.

It’s the first time Molinari is playing the weekend at a major since the 2022 Open Championship, where he finished tied for 15th.

Molinari seemed to be on the rise after his win at Carnoustie nearly six years ago. But, after collapsing at the 2019 Masters, he’s had four finishes inside the top 50 in his last 16 majors.

Maybe Molinari isn’t the threat many expected him to be after that major victory. But, at the very least, he’ll have quite a story to tell about Pinehurst No. 2.

Lionel Messi scores against Guatemala to narrow lead against Cristiano Ronaldo before Copa America 2024

0

Argentina captain Lionel Messi scored against Guatemala on Saturday to increase his international goals tally, thereby narrowing the lead with Cristiano Ronaldo, who has the most goals on the global stage.

It was Messi’s 107th goal for the Albiceleste, bringing him just a goal short of Ali Daei, who is second on the list of most international goalscorers. The Argentine has been a nemesis for Ecuadorians over the years, also scoring the winner in the previous clash between the two sides.

The goal came via a stroke of luck minutes after Guatemala had taken a shock lead over La Albiceleste in the friendly fixture.

The Central American team’s keeper Nicholas Hagen attempted to play out from the back but could only manage to hand the pass right to the Inter Miami playmaker. With enough time and acres of space, ten yards away from goal, Messi calmly slotted in the equaliser.

Tiger Woods misses cut at US Open as struggles in majors continue

0

Tiger Woods will not play this weekend at Pinehurst No. 2.

The 15-time major winner missed the cut at the U.S. Open after going 7-over in his two rounds.

It’s the first time since 2015 Woods has missed consecutive major cuts. He missed the final three cuts that year after finishing in a tie for 17th at The Masters.

After finishing 60th at the Masters in April, he missed the cut at the PGA Championship last month.

Since winning the green jacket in 2019, he has finished outside the top 20 in every major he’s played in (13 straight). It’s his longest such streak since failing to finish inside the top 20 in the first six majors of his career in 1995 and 1996.

From 1997 to 2012, he never finished outside the top 20 in three consecutive majors, and he failed to do so in back-to-back majors just four times.

In nine majors between the 2013 PGA Championship and the 2018 U.S. Open, his best finish was the 17th-place tie at Augusta. He then rattled off finishes of sixth place at the Open Championship, second at the PGA Championship and then his 15th at The Masters.

But it’s been a rough go outside that run. In his last 25 majors, he has four top 20 finishes.

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER LAUNCHES PUTTER IN AIR AFTER MISSING PUTT AMID FRUSTRATING ROUND

Woods birdied his first hole of the tournament but bogeyed half of his final 12 holes Thursday en route to a 4-over 74.

He briefly got inside the cut-line after a birdie on the par-4 fourth Friday, but that was short-lived, and he shot a 73.

The 48-year-old has struggled to compete at a high level since he was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash in 2021.

Woods hasn’t made the cut at the U.S. Open since 2019. He did not participate from 2021 to 2023 and missed the cut in 2020. His best finish at the tournament since a fourth-place tie in 2010 was finishing tied for 21st in 2012 and 2019. He missed five cuts in that span.

This was the third time Woods had competed at Pinehurst No. 2. He finished tied for third in the 1999 U.S. Open and second in 2005 to Michael Campbell. Woods missed the 2014 tournament when it was at the famous course.
